What do you think “war on drugs” means? Why do you think
treatment rather than arrest is a liberal idea? What do you think is the best
option? Is the “war on drugs” a waste of money? Which do you think is
unhealthier illegal drug use or prescription drug use? Is it more important to
end illegal drug abuse or legal drug abuse? Why do you think there is a reform
on the treatment of drug users but legalization of marijuana will not be
considered? Do you believe marijuana should be legalized? Does this source take
a stance on Obama’s policy?
I think illegal drug use is worse because prescribed drugs may be harder to acquire because they need to be prescribed. I believe the term war on drugs means the war on drug abuse in general. I believe the legalization of marijuana is a good way to put some control on it but it seems to be just for the money because the supposed revenue will bring in millions. I feel it being legalized will make it less of a problem while helping pull the nation out of debt. I think treatment is definitely the best option because it goes towards fixing the problem rather than just locking it up and then letting it go just to spread more.
ReplyDeleteIt's possible that the legalization of marijuana could be helpful, but there could also be some big repercussions, making it a controversial issue. Other than the revenue increase, I'm not sure if it would be all that helpful.
DeleteThe war on drugs is used to describe the government trying to stop the usage of illegal drugs. I don't really think that treatment will completely stop the usage of illegal drugs. Treatment means that the users have to agree to try to quit and most of drug users probably won't, so arrest might be a more effect way to stop drug use by providing a harsher punishment. Illegal drug usage is more important to stop because some of the effects are more server than legal drugs. I think that if marijuana was legalized, its usage would go down and it would also generate tax revenue.
ReplyDeleteI found it very interesting how firm the government seems to be on making sure marijuana is not legal, especially since we have previously read liquid candy. Liquid candy was saying how if the government sees that they can make money off of it they will most likely support it. Why isn't it the same with marijuana. I feel like marijuana should be legal because like Bradley said it would bring the US money and maybe even help us make a step out of our large debt. I think both types of drug use can be considered unhealthy if your addicted to it. I think that Obama is making a step in the right direction focusing more on helping them rather than punishing them.
ReplyDeleteI think Emily makes a really good point here. Even though Marijuana is illegal there is the opportunity for the government to use it to create revenue. If certain legal actions were taken and there were strict guidelines to making pot legal, I think it could be a huge tax collector. Obviously there would have to be laws about driving high and all of that just like there is with drinking and driving but I think it could help the government out. On the other hand if the drug was made legal it would lead to more drug abuse in the sense that it is easier to obtain.
ReplyDeleteI think that the "war on drugs" means to stop the future drug users. I think treatment is a more liberal approach because treatment has the potential to help a lot more people get over their addictions because the participate in the treatment instead of just sitting in a jail cell for a few days because there is not enough room at where the offends are held. Due to the fact that treatment can be done in and out patient styles I believe that treatment is better also the fact that when the people are arrested they do not learn to cope but rather just wait for the next fix. Treatment is a process to help learn to cope and handle addiction. I do not think that the war on drugs is a waste of money but I do think that we can use some of the funds towards something else also this program has been going on for multiply years with few results. I think that illegal drugs are more unhealthy because of the fact that prescription drugs are ingested where as illegal drugs are snorted, smoked, and inject it which is not what human bodies are use to. It is more important to end illegal drugs because they are illegal for a reason. I think that the reform on treatment of drug users but not a consideration of legalizing marijuana because why add another thing to try to get treatment for when you already are trying to battle treatment of other drugs. I do not think that marijuana should be legalized. I think that this really just says what someone else said about President Obama's policy.
ReplyDeleteI think that "war on drugs" refers to a process of limiting or eliminating unhealthy drug use. I definitely think that President Obama is taking a good stance on the issue. He is actually trying to help them, instead of just punishing them. Drug addiction isn't something an individual can just get over, they need to be given help and support to overcome their problem. However, I do think that both types of drugs are extremely dangerous, especially if an individual is addicted to them. Therefore, I think that it is equally important to end both and that the "war on drugs" should include illegal and prescription drugs.
ReplyDeleteI believe that a war on drugs means that our nation is beginning to crack down on those with drug habits. Although Obama's intentions are good, there is no significant action being taken to reduce the number of drug users. If people believe that they will just get a slap on the wrist for using hard-drugs including those prescribed, then the use of drugs will continue. If jail time is a consequence of using and abusing drugs, I believe that there will be less desire to continue using those drugs.
ReplyDeleteI think that the war on drugs, despite the fact that it cost our government millions and millions of dollars, is a valid fight. However, I do feel that the legalization of marijuana, would be beneficial for the country. As we saw with prohibition, making something illegal does not necessarily solve the problem. People will still find a way to get their fix, even if it is illegal. In addition, it brings about much more crime and illegal activity that comes along with the illegal production, selling, and transportation of these drugs. Also, it would provide a large amount of revenue for state and federal governments. That being said, I think that marijuana is the only drug we should consider to legalize, harder drugs such as cocaine or heroin should still be illegal.
ReplyDeleteA concerning issue today is the number of people in prison and the amount of money this is costing the government, which in turn is our tax money. The idea of easing up on the amount of arrests over drugs is distressing. Many addicts go through treatment, but tend to go right back. There can be arguments made that the same thing happens after jail time. I agree, I think they need to have phases of jail time and treatment because if the government is spending the money on both it will cost the same even if they say it may be cheaper it will hopefully prevent future occurrences. There is a need for jail time with any drug because many abusing prescription drugs think it is just an illness that can be fixed, but it truly is bad so if a person is placed in jail for any amount of time for the use of drugs then that psychologic connection will be made. Marijuana should not be legalized it would change a lot about the country and we don't need such drastic changes because the people of America couldn't handle if this drug was legalized.
ReplyDeleteThe war on drugs is definitely worth the money but the actions that we are currently taking are not showing enough results to show some kind of difference. Therefore, new actions should be considered like the treatment policy versus punishment and maybe even the legalization of specific drugs could be used to help the war on drugs. If the legalization for marijuana were to actually happen, more revenue would be made by the government allowing them to spend money earned by selling drugs to stop the use of other illegal drugs.
ReplyDeleteI think that doing more to treat people who have drug addictions is great in theory. However, I think it will only do so much because for the most part people who want treatment and help are already getting it and those who are hard core drug users may see this as an opportunity to use and sell drugs even more. I also do not think that legalizing marijuana is a good idea because it was made illegal for a reason. Just because the government could make money off of it doesn't mean that it is good for society.
ReplyDeleteAlthough illegal drugs are the ones getting all the media attention, prescription drugs are abused by a larger amount of the population than the illegal drugs. This is because you can get a prescription for almost anything nowadays so it becomes a lot easier and legal for people to acquire said drugs. It is harder to wage a "War on Drugs" for prescription drugs because there are many people that take/need them in their everyday life and it would be more difficult to tell which people are abusing them.
ReplyDeleteThe war on drugs is ultimately uncontrollable. The government may be able to slow it down, but with the lack of jobs available and the amount of money people can make by producing and selling drugs, i don't believe it will ever go away. Drugs are a large part of the world today. People get prescribed drugs all the time, and that is hard to control because of their availability with a particular diagnosis. Drug addicts know what to say to get prescribed the drug of their choice. The best option may be to legalize marijuana, and try to control prescription drugs and the drugs such as crack cocaine and heroin.
ReplyDeleteI think that " war on drugs" mean the war that are doing to help people that are using drugs to quit and the other people to don't started.I think treatment is better because in this way you help someone to quit and be like everyone else and be back in real life but just with puting them in jail this doesn't make them to quit drugs because they need medicine to help their body release all the chemicals that comes with the drugs it's not easy and they need help not consider as criminal.I think unhealthier are the illegeal drugs because the legal drugs are given from doctor that knows what doeses to give for how long and are sure that their body will not need more from that drug.It is important to end the illegal drug abuse because the people don't know the effects that the drug is doing inside your body.
